Important Tips on Year-Round Safety for your Family
The SEATTLE CHILDRENS HOSPITAL offers the following tips to keep your family safe and healthy.
Riding Safe:
- When your child is ready to roll, make sure he/she:
- Always wears a helmet when riding a bike, scooter, skateboard or roller blading.
- Wears knee and elbow guards for scooter riding, and add wrist guards for roller
blading or skateboarding.
- Ride a bike that fits the child.
Family Bike Rides:
- Children under One year shouldn't ride as passengers on adult bikes.
- Children ages One to Four (or less than 40 pounds) should ride belted and wearing a helmet. They ride
best in a carrier seat mounted on the bike or in a bike trailer.
- Children follow your lead, so always wear a helmet when you ride.
Safe Travel:
- Always strap children in a properly fitted car seat, booster seat or seat belt when traveling by car or airplane.
(Note: If you are in need of a car seat or booster seat, contact KISS (Kids in Safety Seats) at 800-370-SEAT (7328) for a referral to a local car seat loaner program.)
- The back seat is the safest place for children to ride. Children under 13 years old should ride in the back
seat.
- Children in rear-facing car seats should never be placed in the front seat if it has an air bag.
- Check the owners guide for your childs car seat to make sure it is approved for airplane travel.
When renting a car, reserve a car seat or booster seat, or bring your own.
- Lock all doors when driving.
- Never leave children or animals alone in a car, even for a minute. Children and pets left in cars are at risk
for a heat stroke, which can lead to death. Keep empty cars locked at all times.
FOR DRIVERS
- STOP FOR PEDESTRIANS at crosswalks and be careful when passing stopped vehicles.
- SLOW DOWN and obey the posted speed limit.
- YIELD TO PEDESTRIANS & CYCLISTS when turning.
- LOOK before opening your door.
- ALLOW 3 FEET when passing bicyclists.
|
FOR PEDESTRIANS
- CROSS THE STREET AT MARKED CROSSWALKS and intersections.
- BEFORE CROSSING, LOOK left, right, then right again.
USE PEDESTRIAN PUSHBUTTONS
- BEGIN CROSSING THE STREET ON WALK signs.
- STAY VISIBLE AFTER DARK and in bad weather.
- WATCH OUT FOR TRUCKS AND BUSES backing out of parking spaces and driveways.
|
FOR BICYCLISTS
- OBEY ALL REGULATORY SIGNS and traffic lights.
- NEVER RIDE AGAINST TRAFFIC. Ride with traffic to avoid potential accidents.
- USE HAND SIGNALS to tell motorists what you intend to do.
- RIDE IN A STRAIGHT LINE to the right of traffic and about a car door width away from parked cars.
- ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET. Helmets dramatically reduce the risk of head injury in a bicycle accident.
- USE LIGHTS AT NIGHT and when visibility is poor.
